IPv6

Internet Protocol Version 6

IPv6 is the most recent version of the Internet Protocol, the set of rules that governs how data is sent and received over the internet. It was developed to address the shortage of IP addresses available under the previous system, IPv4, and to provide enhanced features and efficiency in data routing.

IPv4, which uses 32-bit addresses, can support about 4.3 billion unique IP addresses. As the internet grew, this number proved insufficient to accommodate the burgeoning number of devices connecting to the network. IPv6 addresses this issue by using 128-bit addresses, significantly increasing the number of possible unique addresses to approximately 340 undecillion (a number with 36 zeros), ensuring that the world won’t run out of IP addresses anytime soon.

An IPv6 address looks quite different from its predecessor; it consists of eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, such as 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334, separated by colons. This format can accommodate the vast number of devices now connecting to the internet, from smartphones and tablets to home appliances and vehicles.

The transition to IPv6 involves more than expanding address space; it also improves the efficiency of data routing and packet processing, enhances security, and reduces the need for network address translation (NAT), allowing for more direct communication across the internet.

For users, the switch to IPv6 is largely transparent, but it is a crucial development for maintaining the growth and sustainability of the internet as a global network. As more devices come online and the demand for internet services continues to grow, IPv6 will play a vital role in shaping the future of internet connectivity.
