WordPress is an open source content management system written in PHP. Launched in 2003 as a blogging platform, the application quickly evolved into a fully featured website builder. It is used in over 60 million websites, including 33.6 of the top 10 million websites as of April 2019.
WordPress can be self hosted on your own web server, or is available as a hosted solution via WordPress.com. For layout and styles, the application uses “themes” that are available to buy from third-party vendors, or custom themes can be designed and coded by a web designer and developer.
Plugins extend the functionality of the application, and are installed according to the features required. There are thousands of free and paid plugins available online, and as with themes, custom plugins can be developed for bespoke projects.
One of the most popular plugins for WordPress is WooCommerce, that turns the application into an online store.
